The new-look Hastings Annual Mixed Open Bowls Tournament gets ready to roll at White Rock Gardens today (Monday).
The tournament will take place over one week instead of the usual two, and, as a result, the number of events has been reduced from eight to five.

It is hoped the changes will lead to the regeneration of the tournament which has been held since 1911.

Entries are roughly similar to last year although the number of ladies taking part is somewhat sparse in comparison to the men's competitions.

"In some of the events the numbers have increased which is very gratifying," said tournament treasurer Gordon Leggatt. "We're quite happy."

Prize-money totalling £2,000 will be up for grabs across the five competitions - the men's singles, ladies' singles, men's pairs, ladies' pairs and open triples.

The opening bowl is due to be sent down at around 9.15am and the tournament proper gets under way a quarter-of-an-hour later.

The bowls tournament - whose main sponsor is once again Croft Glass Ltd - continues until Saturday August 15.
